Chronos clock
Ceramics, 2026
38cm x 15cm x 26cm

This collection of ceramic clocks grew from an inquiry into the dual nature of time. While Chronos marks the sequential passage of our daily lives, the ancient Greek concept of Kairos describes a moment whose significance exceeds its measurable duration—a kind of “deep time” in which our experience of the present expands. For me, the studio is a vessel for Kairos. Through the slow process of designing and making, I become absorbed in the work, experiencing time not as a sequence of hours but as something lived. The accumulated hours of making become part of the objects themselves.

The collection is also informed by historical cross-cultural exchange, particularly the design dialogue between Europe and China through trade. Drawn to vintage and mid-century timepieces, I am interested in how different aesthetic traditions have met and transformed one another, producing objects that carry traces of their cultural histories. As a Chinese-Canadian artist, I approach these objects with an awareness of how design travels across cultures and becomes woven into everyday life.

The translation from theory to object begins with rigorous observation and historical research, followed by an iterative design process of sketching, physical prototyping, and sample-making. Hand-crafted from stoneware and porcelain, the final timepieces are structured with rich, layered textures. This intentional surface treatment reflects an imagery of "layers of complexity," celebrating the depth of the material and the design process itself.

These clocks are intended to do more than measure hours. Their details invite close inspection, and their tactile surfaces suggest a physical relationship with time that digital timekeeping rarely offers. The time I spend making each clock becomes part of the object; I hope the finished work encourages others to pause, linger, and experience time with greater attention.

Crafted through the intimate art of hand-pinching, this collection of ceramic tableware embodies a profound exploration of my craftsmanship. Inspired by my passion for coffee, each piece is meticulously designed to complement various coffee types, from the rich depths of espresso to the frothy heights of cappuccino. Drawing from the textures and elements of nature – sand, water, and stones – the surfaces of these creations evoke a tactile connection to the earth.
